#PUNK: “Punk”, slang for en verdiløs person, ble navnet på en høylytt, raskt utbredt form for rockemusikk som var populær på 70- og 80-tallet. Den kulturelle estetikken til punken inkluderer et mangfoldig utvalg av ideologier (som selvstendighet, ikke-kommersiell kunst-utvikling, ikke-selvtilfredshet, ødeleggelse og fornyelse etc.) uttrykt gjennom mote, visuell kunst, dans, film og litteratur. Disse ideologiene reflekteres i hvordan denne visuelle installasjonen blir resirkulert og forvandlet av utøverne og publikummet

Patty Smith erklærer i sin ikoniske sang “Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger” at “I haven’t fucked much with the past, but I fuck plenty with the future”. Med utgangspunkt i denne dristige utsagnet, erklærer jeg meg selv som “African nigger” – typen som kødder med fortiden og som kødder enda hardere med nåtiden | fremtiden. Med punkens avvisning av all stillstand, etikk og etos blir jeg forført av muligheten for at det ikke er noen fremtid, at fremtiden kun er i nåtiden. I #PUNK iscenesetter jeg en rå konsert inspirert av indie-musikk, americana og av mine formende år i Zimbabwe på 70- og 80-tallet.

100% POP: Pop kan leses som vanlig “kunst”, den kunsten som er mest tilgjengelig for folket. Folket – som den vanlige arbeidende massen, som ikke nødvendigvis ofte besøker museer, gallerier etc. I arbeidet 100% POP går jeg tilbake til hvordan informasjon og kunnskap blir eller ble samlet av de av oss, som vokste opp i mindre frie tider – fra tider med Drum magazine, afrikanske kringkastingsstasjoner, segregerte barer, fattigdom og forbindelser til livsstilen i segregerte forsteder.

Grace Jones er muligens den første superstjernen som var både svart, kvinne, og som ikke beklagde seg for sin tilstedeværelse, som jeg også ble forelsket i. I 100% POP blir Grace Jones sin berømte samling av musikkvideoer, “A One Man Show”, grunnlaget for videreutvikling av ideen om et dekke. Vi tilnærmer oss dette ved “soundclashing” elementer og Grace Jones’, Zimbabwes Chimurenga musikk, dub og støymusikk.

BIOGRAFI : Født i Mutare, Zimbabwe, med base i NYC, har nora chipaumire utfordret og omfavnet stereotyper i Afrika, den svarte utøvende kroppen, kunst og estetikk siden hun startet å koreografere i 1998.

Chaumire turnerer for øyeblikket #PUNK 100%POP *NIGGA (uttalt hashtag punk, one hundred percent pop, star nigga), et tre-dels live opptreden album som har hatt full verdenspremierer på The Kitchen i NYC i oktober 2018. Hennes nåværende og pågående arbeid inkluderer et digitalt bokprosjekt – nhaka – en teori, teknologi, praksis og prosess til hennes kunstneriske arbeid. Det kommende arbeidet hennes er en opera, som vil ha premiere i 2021.

#PUNK: “Punk,” a slang for a worthless person, became the name for a loud, fast moving form of rock music that was popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The punk cultural aesthetic includes a diverse array of ideologies (such as self-reliance, non-commercial art-making, non-complacency, destroying and re-purposing, etc.) expressed through fashion, visual art, dance, cinema and literature. The way the visual installation is recycled and transformed by the performers and audience reflects these ideologies.

In her iconic song, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger,” Patti Smith declares “I haven’t fucked much with the past, but I fuck plenty with the future.” Spurred by this daring proclamation, I declare myself to be an “African nigger” – the sort who fucks with the past, and fucks even harder with the present | future. Encouraged by the punk rejection of status quo, ethics and ethos, I am seduced by the possibility that there is no future, that the future is in the present. In #PUNK, I stage a raw concert inspired by indie music, americana and my formative years in Zimbabwe in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

100% POP: Pop can be read as that “art“ of the ordinary, the art most accessible to the people. People – as those ordinary working masses, who don’t necessarily frequent museums, galleries etc. In the work 100% POP, I️ find myself returning to the ways information and knowledge is or was acquired by those of us who grew up in less free times – in times of Drum magazine, african broadcast stations, color bars, poverty, active connections to rural and township lifestyles.

Grace Jones is perhaps the first superstar who was black, female and unapologetic about her presence that I️ fell in love with. In 100% POP, Grace Jones‘s renowned “one man show” further instigates the idea of a “cover”. We approach this by soundclashing elements and Grace Jones’, Zimbabwe’s Chimurenga music, dub and noise.

NHAKA Practice & Process
nora chipaumire has been developing a living technique, a physical manifesto, a practice and theory called NHAKA – inheritance | legacy – in her Shona language. The work and philosophy owes its genealogy to Shona culture and Shona spiritual practices. Animist technologies, strategies and philosophy can only be useful to those who are willing to reinvigorate their own art making practise with honesty and rigor. Participants are therefore asked to prepare the workshop by defining what might be missing from their own practice, so they can lead the direction of inquiry during the experimental work.

chipaumire is currently touring #PUNK 100%POP *NIGGA (verbalized as hashtag punk, one hundred percent pop, star nigga), a three-part live performance album which had its full world premiere at The Kitchen in NYC in October 2018. Her current and ongoing work includes a digital book project – nhaka – a theory, technology, practice and process to her artistic work. Her upcoming work will be an opera, to be premiered in 2021.

chipaumire is a 2018 Guggenheim fellow and a four-time Bessie Award winner.
